Lesson Two

[Elija Prince]

Elija was standing at the front of the classroom and waited for his students to get ready for their second class. On the blackboard was the topic for this weeks lesson and a cage covered with a dark blanket was standing on his large wooden desk.

He had decided to keep this lesson almost completely practical, knowing that the students enjoyed this more than the purely theoretical parts of his last lesson. The vera verto spell was an easy way to start off with transfiguration as most students would manage to get this one right without to much skill being required and Elija was hoping that the children would focus more on their task at hand this time instead of fighting each other.

Checking the time, he flicked his wand to open the door right on time with the gong of the clock that announced the start of the lesson. Several students were patiently waiting in the hallway and filtered into his classroom when the door opened for them, so Elija waited till they took their seats and got out their wand.

[Severus Snape]

Severus was leaning against the cold wall in the hallway in front of the Transfiguration classroom. His classmates kept their distance to him, though he prefered it that way, as it gave him the time to settle his thoughts. In his mind he went through one of his potion experiments. There was one ingredient missing to make the potion complete, but Severus, for the life of him, couldn't think of what it might be, although it was lurking at the back of his mind.

When the door banged open, Severus followed the other students inside and took a seat in the front row. His black eyes travelled over the cover cage and he wondered what animals they would be transfiguring today.

[Marvolo Gaunt]

Marvolo left the comfort of her common room, packing up her books she left for class. Arriving just as the door opened she walked into the room, she took note of the corner she knew her sister would occupy but her eyes followed the older Slytherin boy who always sat alone, she remembered his comment to the Grimm girl the lesson prior and made up her mind to join him.

Sliding into a seat next to the other slytherin she took out her notes on the Vera Verto spell "Hello Severus" she said while unpacking her things. She knew this one to be the silent type and rather crass when he didn't wish to be disturbed but today he would have no choice in the matter.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn walked in, still a little bit shocked from the previous events in dueling class, she settled herself at the back of the class, she grabbed her stuff and settled it down in front of her with the notes she had made in the professor's office. Jocelyn waited for the professor to speak again.

Eric checked the time and found he was very nearly late for class. He had been scribbling down notes on the Vera verto spell the past 10 minutes and had just about finished. He ran to class and found that people had just started to enter. He looked around the room and spotted three Slytherin's. Eric took a seat in the middle row and began to take out his notes and his wan.

[Severus Snape]

Severus was just going through what he knew about the vera verto spell in his head when someone sat down beside him. An annoyed scowl on his face he turned to the younger Slytherin girl next to him. She was one of the Gaunt sister and he was confused that she would even bother with a halfblood like him. Confusion didn't sit well with Severus though and quickly turned to anger.
"What do you want Gaunt? Got bored of your sisters already?" he hissed at her, hoping to annoy her to leave him alone. He always sat alone or with Lily, that had been like a set rule the last four years and he was not good with changes. Not at all.

[Marvolo Gaunt]

"I wanted to sit with you" she said traces of amusement in her voice, "I could never be bored with Morana but sometimes a little change is good. Our housemates don't notice you, but I do"

[Severus Snape]

Raising his brow in confusion, Severus looked at the girl suspiciously. Why she wanted to sit with him, was beyond him, but who was he to question her. Being seen with a Gaunt sister might improve his standing in his house and Severus was nothing if not capable of using everything to his advantage.
"Fine..." he said and shrugged. "Then stay." Severus didn't really knew hot to act around the girl, so he hoped she didn't expect him to talk to much.

[Katrina Lestrange]

The door was already open when she arrived but luckily the lesson had not started. Celania walked to the back of the class, sending her cousin a curious glance as she passed when she saw her sat beside Severus. She took her seat, took out her things and immediately began her habit of tapping on her thigh as she went through her notes on the spell.

Andromeda lazily tread into the classroom a few moments after Celania and kept her head down. Lately, she had been upset for some reason, but it was hard to figure out by just observations. Andromeda sat down in the middle of the classroom and slouched over her desk.

Elija had patiently been waiting for the student's to enter and had been quite pleased to see that more of them would be partaking in this week's lesson.
Clearing his throat to get his students' attention, Elija signaled the begin of the lesson and walked in front of his desk to addressed his class. "Good morning, students. As you all hopefully know, you will be practicing the vera verto spell today." His eyes glided over the children in front of him calmly. "Nevertheless, I will start off with a few questions to see if all of you have done their homework." Elija turned his gaze towards a certain Slytherin girl, that was sitting next to his nephew today. "Miss Gaunt, please tell the class what the vera verto spell can do." he requested.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn looked around the classroom, she did know this answer because read it over and over again but she was surprised that she wasn't chosen to tell him the answer so Jocelyn kept herself silence.

[Marvolo Gaunt]

Marvolo looked up at the professor as he requested the answer "Vera Vereto is a simple transfiguration spell that turns an animal into a water goblet" she said

[Elija Prince]

Elija listened to his student's answer and nodded his head slightly. "Very good Miss Gaunt, that will be five points to Slytherin." Focusing his gaze onto the whole class he continued to speak. "Now, for this transfiguration spell it is very important that you concentrate on the incantation and the wand movement. Who can tell me what wand movement is required for this spell?" he asked.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn knew that answer and raised her hand, while waiting for the professor to choose someone, Jocelyn grabbed her parchment where she had wrote down the wand movements the other evening in his office. Jocelyn looked around and was still waiting to be picked.

Andromeda casually glanced at the professor and then to Jocelyn. She's got this, hopefully. There's no need, she thought to herself as she placed her hand under her chin. The day was not passing by fast enough.

[Elija Prince]

Elija waited for a few minutes to give his students the time to think about the answer to his question and was pleased to see that one already had raised her hand. "Yes, Miss Grimm." he picked her, knowing that she had worked on this homework while in his office not long ago.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn stood up, her eyes fixed on the professor for not getting too nervous when other students were looking at her.

"For the right wand movement you need to be concentrating at the target then you tap three times with your wand on the target and then point your wand at the animal and say the incantation." After giving the answer Jocelyn sat down again and waited for the professor to speak.

[Elija Prince]

Elija nodded, pleased that she gave the correct answer, just as he had expected. "Very well explained, Miss Grimm. Another five points go to Slytherin." he said and drew his wand smoothly. With a flick of it, the cage on his desk opened and toads came soaring out of it and landed directly in front of the students.
"Now, I realize those creatures are not the most pretty, so I want you all to change them into a nice goblet. I don't expect you to get it right at the first try, but I would be pleased to see you all succeed at least once till class is over. Get started!"
Walking back to his desk, he cast a short tempus charm to see how much time the students had left, but it was more than enough to master this spell, so he was confident that they would manage.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn almost jumped in shock when a fat ugly toad jumped on her table but she composed herself trying to not look at it with a disgusted face. The toad didn't move so Jocelyn started to get her wand making herself ready.

Jocelyn tapped on the toad three times, still the toad didn't move an inch. Jocelyn pointed at the toad and said the incantation quietly. "Vera ferto." Jocelyn waited for a few moments but there was nothing coming out of the toad and it didn't change. Jocelyn looked up for a few seconds but then turned to the toad again and tried it again.

This time Jocelyn didn't think of anything, she just kept her attention on the ugly toad in front of her, still not moving. Jocelyn tapped three times, pointed her wand at the toad and said a little bit louder the incantation. "Vera Ferto." Then out of nowhere the toad changed into a watergoblet and Jocelyn looked at what she had done amazed and surprised. She did it, she changed the toad into a watergoblet. Jocelyn was smiling brightly and looked around if anyone saw what she did but the other students didn't pay any attention to her. Jocelyn looked proudly at what she created.

Eric looked at the ugly toad on his desk and ran his fingers down the toads back. He loved animals and it seemed to be a shame to turn it into a water goblet. However it had to be done. Taking out his wand he attempted to concentrate and tapped on the toad three times saying the incantation "Vera Ferto." However nothing happened. He repeated the procedure three more times without success and on the fifth go he cleared his mind and concentrated on the toad tapping it three times and saying "Vera Ferto." Where his toad had been now stood a water goblet. Eric was delighted by his success and looked around the room noticing that Jocelyn had already achieved the task.

[Elija Prince]

After organizing a few papers on his desk, Elija started to walk along the rows to watch his students practice the spell. He nodded a few times when they did something correctly and gave tips for improvement when it was required.
He stopped next to one of his students. "Very well done Miss Grimm. You performed the spell flawlessly." he said, smiling slightly. "You seem to be the first to manage the spell, so I will reward you ten points."
He flicked his wand and her goblet turned back into the toad. "Please keep practicing though, still you are comfortable with the transfiguration." Elija told her and then continued on to the next student.
"Excellent, Mr Hill. You earned yourself five points. If you keep up the good work, I have no doubt that you will all advanced into the next year by the end of term." he said satisfied with his students' results.
Then he also turned this goblet into it's original form and told his student to keep practicing.

Hayden attempted the spell once with the correct hand movements, but to no avail. "Vera Verto," He cast the spell at the toad who was sitting in front of him. The toad transformed into a water goblet. Nice job, Hayden.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn felt more proud, she thought that no one saw what she did but the professor had seen it and he gave her a compliment.

"Thank you professor." She said to him and practiced a little bit more.

[Elija Prince]

Elija smiled down proudly at his young Ravenclaw and awarded him five points as well. "Very good, Mr. Lovegood. Keep up the good work." he said. Then moved on to the next student.
