Charms Lesson 1

Professor Yaxley sat at her podium conducting one last check over of her lesson for the day. Seeing as this was her first term at Hogwarts, she wanted it to go smoothly. She wasn’t sure if the rumor of her being just like the Deputy Headmistress had circulated among the students as yet, and if it had, she had prepared herself slightly for what might await her when they arrived.

On her small work table next to her, she had all the supplies they would need for this lesson. All she had to do was what for her students to arrive and they would begin with the usual dull things that occur at the start of term. Hopefully, they could sail through that and then move on to her real passion, charms work…

Sirius, Peter and James sat in the common room before shooting a look at the hours. They nearly ran over the other gryffindors as they made their way down. They jumped over the stairs, until they got to charms.

However, they went through the door smoothly, being the firsts to arrive. James and Peter took a seat, as Sirius looked at Professor Briana. He had a reason to be happy to see her now. It no longer meant he'd have to look at his long lost love...one less thing to be worried about through the year. "Professor...." He greeted the woman, taking a seat next to his brothers...

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn rushed into the classroom seeing the professor in the classroom. Jocelyn stopped as she sees there is not many students. Jocelyn sighed and walked to the front of the classroom, ignoring Sirius and his friends. "Morning professor." She greeted and sat down grabbing her charms books waiting for the lesson to begin.

Kiara entered the classroom Curious about the new professor and what she would be like. She sat at a desk and absently got a parchment ready/ She nodded to the professor as she did so, " Good morning professor" she greeted smiling slightly.

Charms was one of her favourite subjects really, they were really useful for all sorts of things, mischief included.. She smiled and waited for class to begin.

After watching Sirius, James and Peter, plus Jocelyn and Kiara enter, Kronos came after them. Sirius looked at him, as he sat next to his sister. Kronos, he sighed in thought, as the other boy just looked at his sister and back at the professor.

(I was asked to write the arrival of Kronos by his player, Rhys, who at the moment he wanted to enter, could not post in the classroom)

[Luna Valkyrie]

Luna rushes to the class, laughing as she shoves Aurora out the way who laughs in return and turns around to see Alex Mortem rush to the twins. Luna sighs and walks ahead. She enters the class and smiles at the new professor. ''Gooodddd Morning Professor.'' She says in a fake cheery tone. Her mood was dampened and she was no longer as happy as she was when she was at breakfast. She looks to see who's entered before her and then holds her books close to her chest. She walks to the very back of the class which was darker than the rest and places her books down. 

Aurora and Alex walk in just after and sit at the very front, eager to learn and to please. Luna stared with annoyance and then puts on a smile. She fiddles with the rings on her fingers, finding comfort for when the class begins.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn was busy with her books when Kronos sat down next to her. she looked at him and then she turned around and saw how Luna walked in. She was confused that he sat down next to her and not next to Luna. Jocelyn looked at him but then she just shrugged and focused on her books again, twirling her wand in her hand. This was a new professor and she was curious what kind of professor she was.

Morgan arrived at the charms classroom, excited as charms was one of her personal favorite classes and a new professor often brought some excitement of its own. Walking in, she spotted Luna stilling alone in the back of the class, which she found odd. Instead of taking her normal seat towards the front, she took one next to Luna in the back. "Morning, Professor," she said brightly before sitting next to her friend. "Hey, Luna. Figured you would be closer to the front," she whispered.

Another year in charms..... Ted mused to himself. Unlike most years he was looking forward to this class. The new professor was rumored to be quite lovely, and perhaps having a new charms professor would make for a much less dull experience. Charms came naturally to Ted, so he was often bored quickly. Maybe this year would be different. "Morning, Professor," he said as he saw her for the first time, having missed the closing feast last term. He found that she was indeed, very pretty. Ted took a seat behind Luna, and readied himself for class.

Vixen had her back slung over one shoulder as she entered the charms classroom. She wasn't sure what to make of this new professor as yet. All she knew was that she was the daughter of the Deputy Headmistress and....well, that was about it. She tipped her head to the new professor and took a seat towards the middle of the class, "Professor."

Professor Yaxley greeted each student as they filed into the class, happy to see so many seemed eager for her class. It would take some time, but she would eventually know their names as well as their faces.

Professor Yaxley held up her hands to draw the students’ attention to herself as she was ready to begin. “Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to Charms. For those of you who don’t know me, I am Professor Yaxley. I will answer to either Professor or Professor Yaxley. Before we get into the real thick of things, there is just some start of term things we need to cover first,” she said waving her wand, causing the chalk to begin writing as she dictated…

“Please write these rules down as a reference for later if need be….” she said. “My rules are simple. Follow them and this class with run smoothly. Do not, and, well, let’s hope we don’t need to worry about that.

1. Arrive to Class on Time: In the even that you must arrive late, the first tardy will be excused and any other after that will require a note.
2. Be Prepared: Bring everything you will need for class to class with you. You will not be permitted to retrieve items you forgot once you are here and class has begun.
3. Show Respect: Both to each other and to me. Show it and you will receive it.

Simple….” Professor Yaxley said.

She took a seat on her stool, she snapped her fingers, and the board cleared. “This year, you will be working on a project in this class. I know I have varying levels of experience here, so there will be areas on this project that are simple and difficult for everyone. That being said, do not be discouraged if you do not move along as quickly as others do,” Professor Yaxley explained. She snapped her fingers again, like a covered being removed, the name of the project appeared on the blackboard: Water, Light, & Fire Globes.

[Selena Snape]

Sitting in the back row once again, Selena had the perfect view over the rest of the class. She was wondering where the rest of her housemates were, but it wasn't unusual for students to turn up late, there were more important things than classes after all, she thought with a small smirk.
In her sleek hand, she copied down the rules written on the board. Nothing new, be on time, be prepared and show respect, she rolled her eyes. After all these years one would think that everyone had memorized these already.

Finally, her professor started to outline what they would be expected to do in the next few lessons and Selena sat up straight, her dark eyes shining eagerly. A project sounded very interesting, a reprieve from the usual boredom of classes at least. Reading the name of said project, Selena smirked. Fire sounded just like her element.

Professor Yaxley smiled as she saw many faces brighten at the idea of a project over simply learning several new or old charms. She just wanted to make sure the class was enjoyable for all the different levels of experience that were likely in the room. “Over the next several classes we will be going over the four charms you will need to create these globes. You will each create one globe containing water, one containing light, and one containing fire. At the end of term, you will create one of each for me, and that is what you will be graded on,” Professor Yaxley explained.

“Before we move on, are there any questions?” she asked looking around at all her students.

Sirius lifted an eyebrow, but smirked. It sounded entertaining enough. It wouldn't seem to get too boring. Then again, Briana and Mira probably shared their imagination. Sirius would definitely have fun. As Briana let out the question into the air, Sirius shook his head with a powerful smirk. He was ready to get onto more important matters...as practicing the charms.

Kiara tilted her head at the project, it wasn't what she expected it was going to be and she certainly didn't know how to make the globes exactly. It was going to be interesting, at the moment charms was her favorite subject. No essay to write.. yet..

She shook her head at having any questions and waited for Professor Yaxley to continue, Crossing her fingers they wouldn't be sent to writing an essay and instead be about to practice charms..

When no questions were asked, Professor Yaxley smiled and rose from where she had been sitting. Walking to the center front of the class, she waved her hand and the blackboard cleared. "Let's start off with something simple on the first day shall we?" she said. She held her hand out and followed the walls of her class, as if wiping them. As her hand crossed the path of a lantern, the light it gave off dimmed. Once all the lanterns were dimmed, she began...

"Lumos Maxima, a more powerful version of the wand-lighting spell, is what we are going to use for the light globes. Can anyone tell me why this is a more appropriate charm to use over Lumos? Think about what the purpose of this light we are making is going to be used for in relation to your project," she said as she wrote the first charm on the blackboard. Turning back to face the class, she waited for someone to propose an answer to her question.

Kiara thought for a second on the question the Professor was asking and lifted her hand to voice her answer. "Lumos Maxima can sustain itself while away from the wand for several minutes.. while the simple Lumos can only exist on the wand tip and wouldn't be useful with the globe we want to make." she said nodding to the globes, Lumos just simply wouldn't do.

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn mumbled the right answer but the hufflepuff called it out loud. Jocelyn scribbled it on her paper and waited for the new professor to know if it was correct. Jocelyn looked at her brother and then looked back at Luna, she was still confused but didn't ask for questions.

[Luna Valkyrie]

Luna tightens her grip on her quill as the feeling of someone staring at her grew. She looks up to see Jocelyn staring at Kronos and then her. She sighs and looks back at the Professor, writing down notes. She liked the idea of these globes, it intrigued and in her mind, could help in the future. Ideas of using it with fighting skills flowed into her mind and a smirk grew on her face.

Professor Yaxley smiled and nodded at the answer given. "Very good! 5 points to Hufflepuff," checking over her class roster, she found the student who had answered her. "Thank you, Miss Kaiser. Just as was said, while Lumos also produces light, the light is limited to remaining on your wand tip. Like so..." she explained and cast the spell to show. "Lumos Maxima, however, can lest for several minutes away from the wand. This works for out benefit as you will be capturing the light inside your globes," she added. This was basic charms work, and Professor Yaxley knew it, but she remembered what it was like to be back in school after the summer holiday.

Turning to the board, she enchanted the chalk to once again write as she dictated. "The incantation for this charm is just as the name suggests: Lumos Maxima. That combined with the proper wand motion of flick your wand, draw it back, and flick it again, if done properly, will cause the tip of your wand to light similar to the Lumos spell, only brighter. Once you have mastered that, with an added flick, the light will go flying in the direction you flicked your wand," she said ending the explanation by performing the charm herself, and sending the ball of light to the far end of the classroom where it remained suspended just above the doorway.

Professor Yaxley motioned for the students to rise from their seats. "I'm giving you the rest of time today to practice this charm. I ask that you all form a single row on the right side of the room to practice, as we don't need anyone heading to the hospital wing this soon in the year," Professor Yaxley said with a smile and a wink. "I will be around to assist you and answer any questions you might have. Begin!"

[Luna Valkyrie]

Luna stood up slowly but with an air of confidence. She walks over to begin the single line formation and she flicks her wand, draws it back and flicks it again. ''Lumos..Maxima!'' Light emits from her wand but dies out. She sighs and closes her eyes, breathes in through her nose and opens her eyes. Her electric blue eyes flickered over to her wand and she repeats it. ''Lumos Maxima!'' She smiles slightly as the light doesn't die out. She flicks it towards the ceiling and it flies up there. She smiles up at it with confidence and puts a hand on her hip, staring at the glowing ball of light.

"Well done, Luna," Professor Yaxley commented to her after checking her roster and finding her picture. "5 points to Hufflepuff. Keep up the good work," she said as she continued going from student to student adjusting here and giving advice there. After a short while, Professor Yaxley let the lamps brighten back to their full strength. "Thank you everyone. Great work today! You are free to go!" she said brightly as she watched her first class come to a close and the students pack their things up to leave.
