Detention 1. Jocelyn Mia Grimm

[Jocelyn Immorta]

Jocelyn was sitting on the hard floor right next to the door of Professor Prince's office. She has been sitting here for an hour because she skipped dinner, took a long shower instead and she was now dressed in dark green sweatpants with her Slytherin sweater, her hair was in a braid hanging on her back. She had been throwing up her lunch after the boy with the black hair known as Severus Snape, prefect of Slytherin has said those words to her.

Jocelyn held her Transfiguration book tightly against her chest, her parchment, quills and her inkpot was in a small bag she had received as a gift when she was little. From far Jocelyn looked small and desperately in need of attention but right now it was only the wrong attention she got and no one even bothered to look at her talents. She felt alone in this huge castle and her cousin didn't took the time to say hello to her like he doesn't want to know her, at the other side Jocelyn wouldn't blame him, she was horrible just like her father said everytime she did something stupid and tortured her untill she was unconsious lying in a ball on her bed, in her room where she was safe.

Jocelyn had no idea what the professor had in mind for her to do and how long she would be there. She hoped she could just work on her homework but she didn't expected that at all.

After his last class for the day was over, Elija took his notes and closed up the classroom. The wooden door fell heavily in it's locket behind him, as he made his way to the Great Hall for dinner. The first day of school was always quite special because one could see which students were actually determined to work hard that term and which would rather lazy around. Elija was quite satisfied with the students of his house, though. They vere polite, obedient and studious, character traits he valued highly in children.

Dinner was uneventful and even the other teachers seemed relieved to finish their first day without any major accident, so he left again after only a few minutes. A short stop to his quarters later, he walked swiftly through the corridors of the castle towards his office. As he rounded a corner, he could already see his student sitting next to the door, waiting for him. She didn't look too well and Elija wondered what was bothering her so much.

"Good evening, Miss Grimm. I'm pleased to see that you managed to be on time." he stated neutrally and unlocked the door. He led her inside and told her to sit down in front of his desk. As he seated himself behind it, he said "Now, I hope you know why you're here? Your behaviour in my class this morning was unacceptable and I have to say that I was and still am very disappointed in you. While I know that you have problems of your own to handle, this is no excuse to act out of line in such a fashion." he told her, his voice serious.
"What I want you to do now, is to write an essay about your behaviour earlier, what caused it and how you should have reacted in a better way than you did. Any questions?"

Jocelyn didn't see the professor approaching her and his office, the floor must have looked more interesting than she thought, she only saw and heard the professor because of his shoes who walked by and that he told her that he was pleased to see her being on time. She pulled herself up, her head low and still her book tightly against her chest, she nodded at him waiting for the professor to unlock his office. Jocelyn entered his office and looked around while he gave instructions to sit in front of his desk, she slowly walked up and was still admiring the walls with books and other stuff who was for her unknown.

Jocelyn sat down and lied her book in front of her, the professor sat down in front of her as well, she looked up to meet his eyes, he had a serious expression and that was probably because it wasn't funny that she was sitting here in detention. When the professor asked her is she knew why she was here, she just nodded and let her gaze go to her book. She knew very well why she was here. The professor told Jocelyn he was disappointed that she behaved like she did and of course she couldn't go on like did.

The professor told what she had to do tonight and asked if she had any questions but Jocelyn didn't had any questions. "Sir i do understand why i'm here and i know that i misbehaved and i'm disappointed in myself too." Jocelyn said weak, she grabbed her stuff and made it ready to start her essay without any arguing or big mouth.

Elija observed his student calmly while she followed his direction. He had to admit that he was slightly surprised by her restrained behaviour, but if he remembered correctly she had been alternating between cautions and almost shy in one minute and insolent and aggressive in the next when he had met her in London. She seemed to be easily angered and maybe this was the reason that she had behaved the way she did earlier today. Either way, he would have to keep an eye on her, to see if she would mellow out as she got more comfortable at the castle.

Satisfied with her compliance, Elija relaxed his posture a bit and beckoned his student to begin with her task. "Take your time to think over what you write. Maybe it will give you a bit more insight in your own actions and motivation. You have two hours."
He had the impression that the young girl didn't even know herself why she acted in certain ways from time to time and maybe this would help her. Otherwise, she would get in serious trouble with the teachers and maybe even other students this year.

Getting up while his student was at work, Elija walked over to one of the large bookcases and pulled out and old looking tome which he took with him back to the desk. A pensive look slipped onto his face as he started to leaf through the book.

Walburga had a newfound tendency to peep into other's business ever since the early births of her nieces. Most people cannot figure it out, save for herself and her firstborn son, Sirius. Along with that, Walburga was also wise to watch over all branches of her family, due to her high role as the matriarch. Even if it was a vague distant relative with a different surname, she felt obligated to assure their welfare because of the blood they shared. With that being said, if one of them were to be disciplined by someone other than herself, she was sure to throw a long-term fit. This obviously excludes the said person's parents and siblings, but if it were someone out of the family, Walburga was sure to attempt to put a stop to it- or die trying.

A few rumors were circulating around the halls that a girl already had managed to earn a detention. For no particular reason, Walburga inquired as many people that she needed to just for the information on who was assigned detention. After a few dozen requisitions, Walburga had learned that her very young cousin, Jocelyn, was the victim of this discipline. It took a long bit of mental debating on whether or not to assist Jocelyn. Well, she does share close consanguinity with Cedrella, and even though I disowned Cedrella, she was one of my favorite aunts. I must help Jocelyn, just for Cedrella, she finally concluded in her head. With great deliberation, Walburga strutted her way to the room where Jocelyn was detained.

Walburga immediately noticed the professor who was holding her for detention- the newly assigned Head of Ravenclaw. She's not even in his house, I don't believe, she thought to herself as she stomped up to his unlocked door. It was quite unmannerly to just barge into the ajar door and would not have help Jocelyn's cause for freedom. Instead, Walburga posed outside of his office's door and rapped on it in an enraged fashion to be sure that she was heard. As she did that, she held onto the doorknob just to be sure that it did not accidentally open, which would make her look more barbaric than inquisitive. Walburga crossed her arms and impatiently waited to be tended to at his door.

Jocelyn started to grab her parchment and began to write her name and the date. She held her quill off the parchment and thought for a moment. Why did she behave like that today in his classroom, out of annoyance? no It was Zoya, she made her look like a fool in front of the Gaunt sisters, the most respected family alive, a good impression was then and there ruined by the little sarcastic lion.

My behaviour was unacceptable, i know that very well. I acted like this before i came to school, the particular person made me look like a fool and an unrespectful pureblood girl when i wanted to make a good first impression in front of two very respected witches under the pureblood families. I got irritated and shoved her on my enemy list. I don't think that is the only reason why i acted the way i acted, i'm scared of this huge castle and no other support from my familymembers at home and on school. I do want to be a good student because i love to learn new things but the motivation to learn isn't there because everyone is telling me what i am in a negative way and what i do is stupid, insolent and childish, they are only negative things and i believe them. To protect myself i react in a negative way and with my short temper is that only a trigger to be aggresssive.
I don't want to be like this but i don't know how i can be differently or do things differently. The things i said were not appropiate and i wish i had just ignored her to stop the arguing we did in your classroom. I wish someone could tell me something i'm good at but that's impossible because i don't know it myself, i don't know what my talents are.

Jocelyn stopped and jumped in shock when someone was rapping against the office door, she made herself small and you could see the panic in her eyes. What if Barty warned my dad because he heard i was in detention, what if my father gave Barty approval to punish me! Jocelyn looked at the professor and her breathing was going on a quick pace, she didn't dare to look at the door instead she looked from the professor to her parchment but she felt dizzy and nauseous.

"I'm not feeling very well." Jocelyn said to the professor more weak than before, her face turned pale and the other moment she was on the floor throwing up in a trashbin next to the professor's desk.

Only the scibling of two quills was heard in the office, as both Professor and student worked on their very own task. On the parchment in front of him, was a list of different spells, not Transfiguration as one might expect, but Dark Arts curses and rituals. Not many people knew he was a secret part of the Order, but those that did, also knew that he was their dark art's specialist. Most members of the light side did not want to get involved with them for fear of being tainted, but Elija knew that one had to know them to be able to fight them. Right now he was working on one of the Headmaster's assignments and used the time while he supervised detention to get some work done.
From time to time, Elija would look up and notice with satisfactiom that the Slytherin was actually thinking about what she wrote. He did not only believe that it would help her get an insight into her own feelings, but he also hoped to understand his student a bit better after reading her essay.

Suddenly, there was a sharp rapping of knuckles against the office door and Elija looked up surprised. He did not expect anyone else tonight, but maybe one of his students needed his help. Just as he was about to tell them to enter, he noticed his student's panicked expression. He quickly got to his feet and crossed over to her when she started to vomit, completely ignoring the person outside his office for now.
He waited till the girl was finished and then vanished the mess with a flick of his wand. A concerned expression slipped onto his face at seeing her pale face. "Are you quite alright, Miss Grimm?" He summoned a glass of water and pressed it into her sweaty palm. "Here, drink this."
A quick glance at her parchment showed him that she had already written quite a lot, so he told her "Maybe you should go to the hospital wing and get a check up? You're not looking very well."
Then he remembered the person outside his door and called "Just a moment." to give his student the time to compose herself.

When Jocelyn was done throwing up, she sat down, then she noticed the professor was by her side and cleaning up the trashbin and handing her a glass of water. Jocelyn took big gulps of water, when the glass was empty she was still sitting on the floor not moving, her hands were shaking.
When the professor asked her if she was alright she looked up at him and nodded. She wasn't alright but she didn't want him to worry about her so she pulled herself up. Her head aching and Jocelyn stumbled a couple of steps before she could grab her stuff but then she reminded herself that there was someone at the door and she couldn't get out without seeing her cousin being angry at her, she looked at the essay and then she decided to sit down to finish it even though her the surroundings were spinning and her face was still horrible pale.

Jocelyn grabbed her quill dipped it in her inkpot and started to write again where she was left.

I'm sorry for my behaviour, i don't want to be like this and maybe i'm not in the right house to misbehave like that but i don't know what to do to change it. I will apologize to the girl and i will be quiet and participate in your lessons.

Jocelyn's vission blurred with tears who were now streaming down her little cheeks, she cried out of fear, she was so caught up that her cousin would burst into the office and drag her out.

Elija watched his student in concern, as she downed the water quickly. He could see her shaking and wondered what had got her in such a panicked state. While she got up and stumbled back to her chair, he let the past few minuted reply in his head. It must have been the knock at the door, he thought. Maybe the girl thought that he had informed her parents and was expecting her father to burst in any minute.
When she started to continue on her essay he wanted to tell her to stop, but she seemed determined to finish.
Still, when she started crying, he walked over to her and took the quill out of her shaking hand. "Now now, Miss Grimm. There is no need for you to become so distressed. Rest assured that I have not informed your father." He said in a soothing voice. Then Elija conjured a handkerchief and held it out for her. "Now clean yourself up a bit and calm yourself. I will go and see who is at the door." he straightened up and walked over to the door. He pulled it open and raised a brow in surprise at seeing his colleague there.

"Professor Black. To what do I own the pleassure of your visit?" he asked her bowing slightly in a polite fashion. "I'm afraid I'm busy observing a detention at the moment."

As the professor grabbed the quill out of Jocelyn's shaking hands she looked up at him, her eyes red stained from the tears. The professor was trying to calm her down by telling her that he had not informed her father but that was not why Jocelyn was so distressed about, they would probably be rumours in the hallways and Barty could be banging on the door. She grabbed the handkerchief and wiped her face. As the professor walked towards the door to look who was behind it, Jocelyn slowly and quietly pulled herself up and walked over to the other side of the desk. If Barty was searching for her and saw that she wasn't here he would go and look somewhere else.

Jocelyn ducked down and sat on the floor against the desk with her knees pulled up and her arms closed around it, she kept herself silent to hear the conversation.

Walburga gave Elija her rendition of a warm smile- which looked as an uninterested smirk. "Evening, Professor," she said to him as she slipped past him and took the liberty to invite herself in. "I've heard through the grapevine that you were holding one of my dearest students in captivity. I am here to retrieve her peacefully. I hope you understand my reasoning." Walburga paced his office, observing his collection of items that sparked her fancy. Hmm, peculiar, she thought to herself as she looked at his desk while she waited for a response. Just having to explain herself was starting to tick Walburga off, and if she were to negotiate she would sure throw an overdone tantrum.

Elija heard a noise from behind him, but kept his dark eyes trained on his colleague in front of him. A little surprised at the woman's words, Elija watched her walk past him and closed the door to follow her back into his office. His student was nowhere to be seen, but there also were not many places she could go and hide, so he didn't question it farther for now.
A snort escaped his lips at the other professor's attitude and he put up a slightly amused smirk and his face. "So, that's what you heard?" he said chuckling. It was of course natural that such a fact would go around the school in such a fashion, although he did wonder why his colleague cared about it.
"Well, I'm not holding anyone captive here. Miss Grimm acted out of line in my class this morning and so I had to assign her a detention which she will complete under my supervision." he told her, his voice neutral but firm. It was his right as a Professor to assign detentions and he would not let another professor undermine his authority, especially in front of a student.
His colleague seemed to be in quite a mood and was pacing his office while Elija walked over to his desk and leaned against it. "Miss Grimm's detention is almost over and as soon as she is finished, you are free to take her" he said, voice still smooth, but decisive. He knew of the woman's status in the wizarding world, but Elija was really not someone who would be impressed by blood status and name only.

Jocelyn was still sitting against the professor's desk on the floor, she was breathing slowly and as quiet as she could, her hands were sweating and her dizzyness came back. She had no clue who came in but at the hearing on footsteps they were inside and the professor was leaning against the desk where she had sit a couple of moments earlier. Jocelyn looked around but there were no other places she could hide so she hoped the person would leave soon so she could pull herself up and finish her essay.

Jocelyn's dizzyness became bigger and she questioned herself if this was a reaction on stress, to thow up everything she had in her not that it was much the fact she skipped dinner and her lunch was already out.

Walburga eyed the desk for about a minute longer and then turned to the professor. Slightly narrowing her eyes at him, Walburga bit her tongue from saying anything offensive. This was the only hope that the professor was not aware of how to anger her, and Walburga did not yet want to relieve his ignorance. The only thing to do now was just to leave and wait for her anger to die down, which could take weeks if not months. If she was to be confronted later, her anger was bound to still be in place. With a solemn nod of her head, Walburga stomped out from his office and closed the door quietly behind her. He'll know, one day, she thought to herself as she strutted away from the courtyard.

It was silence in the office for a couple of minutes and then Jocelyn heard footsteps and the door closed quietly. She waited a couple of seconds and then pulled herself up but holding the desk to stop her dizzyness, Jocelyn saw a list with Dark Arts spells and notes from she assumed the professor, he was the Transfiguration teacher what did he want with Dark Arts spells, was he a dark wizard trying to get something from the castle she questioned herself but she looked away from it immediately and stepped carefully to the other side of the desk. Jocelyn grabbed her stuff and handed him the essay she made, She took a couple of steps back from him, keeping her distance between them for her own sake and waited for him to dissmiss her.

Thoughts were racing through her mind. Who was he and why did he had a list of the most dark and dangerous spells on his desk in the sight of a students who is from a pureblood family, he knew that she was raised with the pureblood above everything else. Did that mean he was one of us or he is against it and she is not safe to be alone with him.

"M....May i be ex......excused?" She asked the professor stumbling over words.

The woman before him looked livid and Elija raised his brow in wonder. What was it with Slytherins and their easily triggered temperament, he thought. He watched several emotions play over his colleague's face and inclined his head slightly when she turned to leave. She stomped out of his office and he could finally turn back to his student who was still hidden behind his desk.
He waited patiently for her to get up, his thoughts still on his colleague's weird behaviour. He wished that there was at least one male teacher at the castle, but it seemed that he was surrounded by women that had some sort of problem." He snorted and saw that his student pulled herself upright. Elija didn't miss her glance to the list he had written down earlier and winced slightly. He shouldn't have left it there for her to see.

She walked up to him and Elija took the essay from her hand. She still seemed shaked up and ready to faint and for a second he thought about escorting her to the hospital wing, but dismissed it again.
"Yes, you are excused. I advise you to go straight to bed, you look a bit faint. And it's past curfew already, so you better are not caught outside." He nodded at her and walked to his desk to sit down behind it again, her essay in his hand. "I would like you to meet me here tomorrow evening to discuss your essay. Good evening, Miss Grimm." he said, starting to read what she wrote.

[Dellen Lestrange]

Dellen left the safety of her classroom this evening to roam about the castle. After checking in on the students in the common room she walked up the stairs, down the wide cold hallways and towards the court yard. She smiled at the moon and ventured out the door way, passing a disgruntled Walburga. Dellen knew her niece well enough to know someone had sullied her mood. Walking down the direction of which the young woman had come from she took in the site of a shaken Jocelyn and the head of Ravenclaw. "Has my niece Walburga been giving you trouble Elija" she said with a note of amusement.

Jocelyn looked horrified when the professor told her that she had to come back tomorrow. She didn't want to come back after what she saw on his desk but she felt too sick to argue with him. When Jocelyn wanted to walke away her head of house walked in, Jocelyn nodded at her and she walked out.

Seeing that his student didn't reply to him, Elija sighed but brushed it off to her being sick to begin with. Maybe the stress of the first day at school had just caught up to her and he didn't want to add to it.
Suddenly, the door opened and the head of Slytherin walked in. Slightly annoyed that he was being interupted again he had to force his face into a neutral expression.
His student barely nodded at her head of house before hurrying out of his classroom. Elija watched her walk out and turned back to his colleague, subtly slipping his spell list under another parchment. "Trouble? No not really." he shrugged. "She just wanted to take Miss Grimm out of detention for reasons I don't know. When I didn't allow that she seemed a bit ... let's say displeased." he said chuckling and smirked.

"Walburga is quite the wild card and has been for years" she said "I was just checking to make sure she didn't hex you until your hair fell out" she smiled at the memory of her niece's previous explosions with people whom did not please her or do as she says "I'll leave you to it then Elija goodnight" turning she slipped through the doorway, considering a walk in the forest as she left.

Inclining his head lightly, he bid his colleague goodnight, before walking back to his desk. He still had to finish his list and check his student's essay.
His eyes quickly skimmed the text in front of him and his brow furrowed. The essay was a bit rambled, but the girl managed to discribe why she reacted the way she did and Elija could understand that she felt humilated in front of the two Gaunt sisters. Most students had a lot of respect for the two students and tried to stay in their good graces. Nevertheless, she obviously realized her mistake, so he was satisfied. Only the last point they had to talk about when she returned the next day.
Stretching his limbs Elija collected his belongings and exited his office to walk towards his quarters. The spell list could wait for tomorrow.

Returning back the next day.

Jocelyn waited for his office, she felt a little better but she was still feeling sick. The list with the dark spells still popped in her head. Jocelyn was nervous about his opinion on her essay.

[Elija Prince]

Elija was sitting in his office, correcting the first homework for this term when a knock sounded on the door. He flicked his wand causing it to swing open and called for his student to enter. His gaze travelled over her face and noticed that she was looking slightly more healthy than the day before, but that wasn't a great feat seeing as she was vomitting during detention yesterday.
"Good evening Miss Grimm, please sit down." he waited for her to seat herself before continuing to speak. "I have read your essay and I have to say that I completely understand that you would feel embarrassed by what Miss Morte said to you. Nevertheless, you also wrote that you were sorry and understood that your reaction was wrong which shows me that you hopefully have learned from this mistake and will not repeat it again." Elija looked steadily at his student.

"Now, the thing I'd like to discuss with you is another. You wrote that you had problems adjusting to life here at the castle and that you were lacking motivation." he paused shortly to organize his thoughts. "I can tell you that it is not uncommon for first years to feel slightly intimidated by the huge school and I am quite sure that you will make friends and feel more at home soon. To the second point I can only tell you that you will receive words of praise by me and the other teachers if you pay attention in class and work hard for your grades. That is all we expect from you." he leaned back in his chair and watched his student patiently. Tonight he felt much more relaxed than the day before and was willing to hear the Slytherin out.

Jocelyn took a seat when Professor Prince called her in, listening to his words about her essay.

"Professor i learned from the mistake, i really do but i don't think i can make any friends here, it is hard for me to make friends, the other first years of my house tell me that i'm a bookworm and i'm only doing homework and nothing else, that i don't belong in Slytherin.." She paused for a couple of seconds, those words were pretty heavy for her, she looked at her hands before she returned to look at the professor with a sad expression.

"Am i being put in the wrong house, i told the sorting hat i wanted to be in Slytherin to make my parents proud but do i belong there? i'm not a cold person who doesn't care about people, if the sorting hat was right why do i feel so bad all the time and can't i do anything good?" Jocelyn didn't notice the tears were formed in her eyes.

"I do work hard and i try to pay attention but it is hard if you not get what you seek for, friendship, love and motivation not from being good at school but also that you're worth living." Jocelyn wiped away her tears and looked at her hands fidgeting with

Elija listend patiently to his student's words, keeping his expression blank though encouraging. He still had to hide an amused smile from time to time, but a chuckle couldn't be helped.
Still, when he noticed how bothered she was by the situation he sighed deeply and thought about what he could say to sooth her worries a bit.
"Miss Grimm..." he began slowly. "You have to excuse my smile, trust me I didn't mean to laugh about you. There are just a few things that might seem horrible to you right now, whereas I believe you will work through them in time." he told her with a small smile. "To the issue about your house. The sorting had knows exactely what. he is doing, trust me. I am sure if he thought you wouldn't belong to Slytherin, then he wouldn't have sorted you there, no matter if you asked for it or not.
My family consists of Ravenclaws and Slytherins only and I know that both houses are closely related. Now you say that the other children call you a bookworm and too studious, which are traits more often found in my house. Nevertheless, Slytherins are not, as you put it, cold and uncaring. They do tend to keep their emotions more in check and pretend not to care, but it's all just a front for most of them and exceptions prove the rule, correct?" he watched her closely to see her reaction.

"I don't know you that well yet, but I know that from the way you behave you do fit in Slytherin as well. You are ambitous and cunning, you only need to show more determination which Slytherins are famous for. Just ignore the other students for now, if you show them that you are proud of your house and of who you are then they will respect you as well." he sighed. "I know it's easier to say then be done, but that's the only way. Do you remember what I told you when we first met? That you need to see this as a chance. You are away from your family here and now you are responsible for what you do."

Her last words were a bit harder to contradict, as he knew of her family and their treatment. "First of all, miss Grimm, everyone is worth living. And so are you. You are a smart young girl that had a lot to cope with at home, but this is no reason to doubt yourself. Friendship will take time, especially seeing that you're in Slytherin whose members are very distrustful and suspicious of others. Maybe you could try to find friends in other houses like Hufflepuff or even my own as they are less prejudiced than Gryffindors for example. And love ... I realize that you probably are lacking that at home, but there is nothing you or I can change about it. You can only try to find love from friends here at Hogwarts." Elija looked at his student with a serious expression on his face.
