Character sheet from
Harper Selwyn
Name
:
Harper Selwyn
Jobs
:
Dept of Mysteries Head
Personality
:
Harper Selwyn is a man loyal to three things: himself, the Department of Mysteries, and Lord Voldermort... in that exact order. It's something of an open secret, yet not one that is ever brought up and mentioned-- either due to the fact that Harper has yet to commit any action against Lord Voldermort and the rest of the ministry that is more than a minor annoyance, or out of fear from that rarely-mentioned and secretive department. Those Unspeakables have something of a reputation, after all, and in many ways Harper does fit that mold. There is always a thrill of fear in the unknown and mysterious, and like the department he heads there is little that is actually known OF Harper. He smiles easily enough, and yet... that smile never quite seems to meet his eyes, and he always seems like he's quietly laughing at some secret joke that only he is clever enough to understand. Oh, and Harper is a clever one. He keeps his eyes open and his mouth shut. Knowledge is power, after all. Hide it well. And as a talented Occlumens, he is very, VERY good at keeping things hidden. It's not something that most people pick up on quickly. Harper is an affable and friendly sort on the surface, and he is quite good at talking. Yet as good a talker is, he's an even better listener. Much as he likes to talk, Harper is skilled at revealing nothing of substance. In a sense, his friendly nature is little more than a mask. At his core, Harper is a cold, calculating individual. Every piece has their place, every person their role to play. Some fit into the quiet machinations of his own plans and agendas. Not that he tells it. Harper plays things close to the chest. Very close. Even those who claim to be friends or on good terms with Harper find themselves at a loss to his personal details. He's extremely private like that. Either he's been molded by all his years in the Department of Mysteries... or his temperament made him a perfect candidate for the department in the first place. It's hard to say. Harper's not really a man of action or a hands-on figure. He prefers the big picture, the long-term goal. Sit back, watch, gather the required info. Build from that. Sometimes he is made to offer subtle manipulations, but on the whole he prefers a hands-off approach. Let the people do their thing. All will sort itself out in the end... one way or another.
History
:
He was born on an unusually frigid October night, the second child and eldest son to the Selwyn family. Like many of the so-called Sacred Twenty-Eight families, the Selwyns were wealthy and well-respected, as prideful as they were ancient and pure. Not as wealthy or respected as some, perhaps, but in a society driven by the obsession of purity, Harper was born into a life of luxury. He was never wanting for anything... materialistically, at least. Was his home a happy one? Looking back, he can admit it was not. His father, Patrick, was a schemer and a dreamer alike, and was obsessed with the idea of bringing the Selwyn family into further prominence and power. A powerful member in the Ministry's Department of Magical Law Enforcement, he was a ruthless and politically-minded being. He had risen high, but he was never satisfied with what he had. Not only did he scheme to rise himself higher in the Ministry, but he was determined that his children would all rise even higher. Evelyn, Harper's mother, was a quieter figure, though she shared in on her husband's ambitions. Power is ever so intoxicating, after all. Unlike Patrick, however, she made a career out of having and raising children, while making appearances and contributions to various highbrow philanthropic charities and events. Naturally, it did not make for an especially delightful childhood for Harper or any of his siblings. Almost from the start, they were all trained and instructed in order to get every edge and advantage in life, all the while being quietly manipulated and groomed to fulfill their father's ambitions. As the eldest son, Harper found himself faced with extra burdens: he was to carry on the name and bloodline, after all. As the eldest son, the rights to the Selwyn family were his. At first Harper more or less went along with his father's plans, childishly ignorant of all that was truly going on behind the scenes. It wasn't like he knew anything else-- interaction with other children his age was, like the rest of his life, highly regimented and ordered. Time passed. Harper grew. Schooling came, and with schooling came outside knowledge. Experiences. Points of view and ideas that were not under his father's complete control. Harper found he could not get enough of it, and on his own managed to piece together his own views, ideals, and goals. Were they twisted by the years under his father's machinations? Of course. But they were HIS. And Harper found he did not want to be his parents' puppet. Teenage rebellion was an inevitable thing. Harper's push was a quiet one; carefully testing the waters and seeing just how far he could push the envelope. And then he would push just a bit further. Oh, how it set off the family fights on the summers and holidays! In a way, Harper found he rather enjoyed it. It gave him assurance that he was no longer a puppet, despite all the roadblocks and grasps at control his parents made. He had his own plans, his own ambitions, and his own goals and curiosities. Yet he knew not to push too far. He knew when to be careful, when to hold back. Much as he came to clash with his father, Harper knew the old man was far too good a resource and lifeline. For now. Perhaps Harper's greatest act of rebellion came into play shortly after his graduation. Under Patrick's influence, Harper joined in the Ministry. He served briefly in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, as expected. Just long enough to build up a reputation. Just long enough to set up connections. Make friends. Quietly express his own goals, where his father could not see or hear. And then? He vanished. For five years. To say it caused a stir in the family would be an understatement. There was panic, fear. The heir to the house was lost. The heir to the house was dead. All that work, all that effort, gone! Ruined! There was no word, no note. No one who knew Harper had known where he vanished to. An accident? A reckless mistake? No, Harper had always been too smart, too careful. He couldn't have been done in by something like that. Imagine everyone's surprise when Harper finally did turn up, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Shock turned into relief. Joy. Then when Harper's parents found out where he had gone, furor was soon to follow. Unspeakable. Harper had become an Unspeakable. All those plans, all those ambitions, gone. Once one went into the Department of Mysteries, one was assigned to the department for life. Up until recently, Harper simply proceeded quietly with his work and research in the department, seemingly paying little attention to the goings-on of the outside world. Just as he had been in the five years where he had all but vanished from the map, the Selwyn boy has kept a quiet and unobtrusive presence, rarely interacting with anyone outside his department. Part of the job, after all. And, well, he has his own reasons. In the summer of 2058, something relatively unusual happened: there was a change in the Department of Mysteries. The head of the department passed on quietly (natural causes, it's generally agreed upon, but some whisper that there was foul play afoot in the most secretive of departments). What exactly transpired after remains unknown to the wizarding world at large, but the end result is well-known and documented: Harper Selwyn took over the role of departmental head at the surprisingly young age of thirty. Some might have whispered at the death of the previous departmental head, but having someone as young as Harper in the role has certainly raised more than a few eyebrows within the Ministry. Yet Harper's role has so far proven to be a quiet one. Too quiet, for any department other than Harper's. Considering all that the Department of Mysteries handles, that is one place where no news is good news. And Harper is more than happy to keep it that way... for now.
